Tour overview

Nelson Lakes Nature Recovery at Lake Rotoiti in Nelson Lakes National Park is the perfect place to see conservation in action and the results of an intensive pest trapping and eradication program. You will experience the vivid birdsong and the rejuvenated under story of pre-European times now back to a condition that has allowed the re-introduction of kiwi & kaka.

Travel south from Nelson with the first stop at Ernest Lord Rutherford’s memorial before driving over the Spooner & Hope Saddles keeping an eye out for the remnants of the doomed railway connection to points south & west including the Belgrove Windmill built in 1897.

Explore the railway history at Kawatiri with a short walk through a tunnel & honey-dew forest.

A sumptuous gourmet lunch, will be enjoyed on the shore of Lake Rotoiti while you look up to the bush line where forest gives way to alpine plants – is a remarkable feature of the park; the change is abrupt & uniform as if drawn by a ruler.

During the afternoon we take an easy walk through the honey dew forest of the Nature Recovery Project area and experience first hand the success of the ecosystem restoration that has allowed the release of kiwi, and improved the breeding of Kaka & Robins. Native mistletoe, giant snails, bats & insects are also targeted for recovery.

You will leave with a better understanding of the significant geological and maori history and the importance of these inland conservation islands and how conservation has become the New Wealth.
