Tour overview
Travel through the wine and food basket area of the Waimea Plains and the historic Moutere region
before driving up Takaka Hill and taking a short walk through ancient rock formations and unique
forest to the first breathtaking viewpoints overlooking Motueka, Waimea, Tasman Bay, Nelson and the
Mount Richmond Forest Park.
Within a short distance enjoy the stunning views of both Abel Tasman, Kahurangi National Parks and
Golden Bay from ‘Marble Mountain’ from one of the highest roads in New Zealand, and its amazing
rock formations. Descend into Golden Bay and the township of Takaka.
Morning tea will refresh you before walking to Pupu Springs and view the world’s clearest water and
marvel at the journey it has taken and the importance of this site to Maori. Significant forest
remnants and historical gold mining will also be seen here.
Driving north east we stop-off at the Abel Tasman Memorial and gain an understanding of the
conflict in 1642 between local Maori and Abel Tasman within this beautiful golden sand bay below.
Our journey proceeds through a hole in a rock and along side towering limestone stacks before a
sumptuous lunch of local gourmet food is laid out on a picnic table at Tata beach.
Before we turn at Wainui Bay you can look down on one of the local mussel farms and across to Abel
Tasman National Park.
The last walk of the day is a real gem; through the fascinating, ancient, water-worn limestone
outcrops, Nikau Palms and giant Northern Rata of the Grove Scenic Reserve accompanied by authentic
stories of the weird and wonderful!
