Tour overview
From Nelson drive through the wine and food basket areas of the Waimea Plains and the historic
Moutere with our destination clearly in view we cross to the west bank of the Motueka river and
drive steeply through farm land and then beech bush up to the Flora car park. Road access itself is
a real feature of this journey.
With refreshments in the shelter here, glimpse an idea of how the view will unfold as we walk a
well graded track towards the Mt. Arthur hut through beech forests and groves of rare and wonderful
candelabra-like mountain Nie Nie and other colourful sub-alpine forest. An unreal mountain forest
like no other!
Take a hot drink at the comfort of the hut and absorb the stunning views before ambling up the
mountain track to admire the one of the biggest collection of alpine native plants to be found
anywhere.
Walk or linger for as long as you wish over the oldest granite rock formations in New Zealand that
make this mountain special and marvel at the 360 degree views of Tasman Bay, Mt Richmond Forest
Park and Kahurangi National Park
This circular walk takes us down through ever changing alpine scrub back into beech forest where
noxious animals are being controlled by keen volunteers. You are rewarded by their efforts with the
improving health of the forest and the number of birds singing and fluttering around as you walk to
Flora hut, the site of a store in the gold mining days.
Return to the car park in around 4 – 5 hours after a not too difficult walk to be followed by wine
tasting and refreshments on route back to Nelson as time permits.
